I'm really hoping this doesn't taste like it looks: like cardboard... I think though that when it's paired with a good sauce and seasoned with the right spices, it'll be fine. Throw in a piece of baked chicken and a nice glass of wine, and I doubt we'll even be able to notice the difference. Now getting Josh to be more open-minded about it is another thing...

We've been celebrating the Halloween holiday by watching scary/suspenseful movies. Sometimes, these movies are lame. As is the case with this movie: Wrong Turn 3. As if we didn't get a clue from the first two... Lots of blood, crazy human traps, and bad acting. Next up: Drag Me To Hell. We're not expecting an oscar winner...

Worst.Call.Ever. We weren't home on Saturday to actually watch this UFC match so we'd been avoiding MMA news outlets, cautiously reading text messages, and hoping phone calls wouldn't ruin the outcome of the title fight. Shogun got ROBBED!!! At least, AT LEAST, three out of the five rounds were dominated by Shogun and yet Machida retains his title. He even thought that he should have lost but in his cocky Machida attitude, he says "The judges said I won." Poor Shogun. He hasn't had much luck since coming over from Pride, which seems common when fighters do that... I hope they do a rematch. Like, NOW!

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. This movie got mixed reviews but both Josh and I thought it was awesome. With the exception of the two ghetto robots... Lots of explosions, noise, in-your-face action, and hot girls. But would it be a Michael Bay movie without all of those things?? I think not!

Josh and I went on a date to our favorite movie theater (30 minutes away...) to see Paranormal Activity. This movie was suuuuuper hyped here and was all over tv to "demand" that it get played in our area. Seriously, I coulda waited til it came out on HBO, or even network tv. It was lame. Although, I put on my Super Chicken cape and put my hat over my eyes at the very end because I knew it was going to be scary. And from what Josh says, it was an image that I would have had much difficulty getting out of my brain before I went to bed last night... We shoulda gone with my choice and seen Where the Wild Things Are in IMAX...

Okay, I'm trying the whole Project 365 thing again. Starting on a completely random day...

My UGG slippers. I can't live without them on chilly days/nights. It's like slipping your foot into a warm cloud of goodness. Ahhhh... And yes, there really is a difference between these and the Dearfoams you'd get at a department store. ThankYouVeryMuch.

Happy Anniversary To Us!
We celebrated our two-year wedding anniversary on October 13th. Since money is kinda tight right now (thank you to our three dogs....), we did a casual dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Rancho Cordova. We were also looking forward to the mizithra cheese spaghetti. Yum! It was still relatively early so Josh suggested that we head over to the indoor mini-golf place in the same complex. Neither one of us had been there before so it sounded fun. It's called Monster Mini-Golf and its perpetual Halloween and black light decor would be a stoner's both dream and nightmare. It was fun though, even though one of us got severely SPANKED in the scoring...me.....

I think this took me 10 or 11 putts to get the ball in the hole...

The name of our next dog. Can you guess what it is???

The evening was very nice. Josh got me a very sweet card and a bunch of our "wedding flowers." Yeah, he's kind of a nice guy. I think I'll keep him around for another year. At least. And as I'm looking at the pictures as I post them, I realized that we were all matchy-match with our sweatshirts. Blech!
Future note to self: black light environments do not photograph well...

The chilliness is here!
It's almost to the end of October and we're breakin' out the blankets! And so are the dogs. We'll lay a blanket on the floor or one of the beds for them and they'll burrow underneath it. With the bigger ones, sometimes the only way we know they're there is that the mound of blanket is snoring. I don't think that Legion likes laying under the blankets though... He's perfectly fine on his bed.

Sleeping babies!

Legion graduated from his puppy kindergarten class last Saturday. The instructors were very impressed with him for being such a well-behaved gentleman. We still have things to work, and expand, on but he's on his way! We are going to continue with obedience classes in the future but can't enroll him until the January class. He's got some pretty wicked growing pains right now and we have to keep him sedate for a few more weeks. He wasn't even able to go to his graduation class and get his picture taken... We have him on some pain meds that keep him a little more calm but it's just so hard, and sad, to see him wanting to play with the other two but we keep having to separate them. It's for his own good though and we know that he'll be healthy in the long run.

Halloween Pictures
Here are all of the Halloween pictures that we got of the dogs this year. And a couple of the new baby. Who's not so baby-sized anymore.... The last couple of times that we've taken the dogs in to get pictures taken, we've had the same kid take them. He's so incredibly patient with them, and us!, and it shows in the pictures. Even though they're not super great pictures, they're not horribly bad either.

And the baby pictures.

Legions stats: 4 months, 3-ish weeks old. 60 pounds. He's now taller than Abbi. His paws are almost as big as the palm of my hand.

October, so far
This month has been pretty uneventful. Our major highlight was taking the kids to get their Halloween pictures taken. It's an insane, stressful, and frustrating ordeal but we love having the pictures, and seeing everyone laugh at the costumes while we're viewing them on the screens in the studio. Can you really even call The Picture People a "portrait studio" though...?
This was what we saw on the way in to get the pictures taken.

In our effort to have a well-socialized dog, we're taking the pup everywhere with us. This time, it was to Yogurt Monkey. And of course, he got his very own treat too. He loved it!

I've been using my furlough Friday's as "me" days and not really doing anything around the house. Legion got fed up with that and told me that I needed to get off my butt and sweep off the patio. Hint, hint mom!

But he's enjoying my days off too.

Josh's highlight of the month so far was me FINALLY getting my blood drawn. I've never willingly gone in to get it drawn (minus one time in the ER...) so he was happy that I went in. I wasn't. I was high as a kite though from the tranquilizer that I had to be on to actually get me to step foot in there.
Josh snapped a picture as proof because he didn't think that anyone would believe me when I told them that I'd actually gone and done it. Notice though, that I have a tattoo on my wrist, along with three others, and I'm fine with getting those done. But when it comes to ONE baby needle being stuck in me, I lose it.

Our two-year wedding anniversary is tomorrow so hopefully, we'll be going shopping tonight, or sometime this week, for Josh's anniversary presents. Well, one of the two. I'm taking him to The Tinder Box to pick out some cigars and a nice humidor. I don't know much about cigars, other than they smell like poop..., so he gets to pick out the ones he wants. The other present will have to wait til later, when I have some time off from work. I'm getting him an exhaust system for his truck so I need to have a few hours free. Oh, and he already knows what he's getting because he said it wasn't fair that I already knew my gift so he wanted to know his. And we all know how bad I am when it comes to keeping hush-hush about presents... We don't have anything planned for our anniversary....yet. Maybe we'll head up to Apple Hill this weekend and stop at some of the wineries. Or something....

Jasper and the Unbaked Yeast Rolls
While reading the story, feel free to insert Abbi, Hayden, or Legion in place of Jasper.
Those of you who have/had animals will probably appreciate this more. It is a story that is hilarious in itself and the person that wrote it is a good writer and made the story even better. Enjoy...
We have a fox terrier by the name of Jasper. He came to us in the summer of 2001 from the fox terrier rescue program. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this type of adoption, imagine taking in a 10 year old child, about whom you know nothing, and committing to doing your best to be a good parent.
Like a child, the dog came with his own idiosyncrasies: he will only sleep on the bed, on top of the covers, nuzzled as close to my face as he can get without actually performing a French kiss on me.
Lest you think this is a bad case of "no discipline," I should tell you that Perry and I tried every means to break him of this habit, including locking him in a separate bedroom for several nights. The new door cost over $200, but I digress...
Five weeks ago, we began remodeling our house. Although the cost of the project is downright obnoxious, it was 20 years overdue AND it got me out of cooking Thanksgiving dinner for family extended family, and a lot of friends that I like more than family most of the time.
I was assigned the task of preparing 124 of my famous yeast dinner rolls for the two Thanksgiving feasts we attended.
I am still cursing the electrician for getting the new oven hooked up so quickly. It was the only appliance in the whole darn house that worked, thus, the assignment.
I made the decision to cook the rolls on Wednesday evening to reheat them Thursday morning. Since the kitchen was freshly painted, you can imagine the odor. Not wanting the rolls to smell like Sherwin Williams #586, I put the rolls on baking sheets and set them in the living room to rise for a few hours. Perry and I decided to go out to eat, returning in about an hour. The rolls were ready to go in the oven.
It was 8:30pm when I went to the living room to retrieve the pans. Much to my shock, one whole pan of 12 rolls was empty. I called out to Jasper and my worst nightmare became a reality. He literally wobbled over to me. He looked like a combination of the Pillsbury dough boy and the Michelin Tire man wrapped up in fur. He groaned when he walked. I swear even his cheeks were bloated.
I ran to the phone and called our vet. After a few seconds of uproarious laughter, he told me the dog would probably be ok, however, I needed to give him Pepto Bismol every two hours for the rest of the night.
God only knows why I thought a dog would like Pepto Bismol any more than my kids did when they were sick. Suffice it to say, that by the time we went to bed, the dog was black, white, and pink. He was so bloated we had to lift him onto the bed for the night.
We arose at 7:30 and as we always do first thing; put the dog out to relieve himself. Well, the dog was as drunk as a sailor on his first leave. He was running into walls, falling flat on his butt, and most of the time when he was walking, his front half was going one direction and the other half was either dragging on the grass or headed 90 degrees in another direction.
He couldn't lift his leg to pee, so he would just walk and pee at the same time. When he ran down the small incline in our back yard, he couldn't stop himself and nearly ended up running into the fence.
His pupils were dilated and he was as dizzy as a loon. I endured another few seconds of laughter from the vet (second call within 12 hours) before he explained that the yeast had fermented in his belly and that he was indeed drunk.
He assured me that, not unlike most binges we humans go through, it would wear off after about 4 or 5 hours and to keep giving him Pepto Bismol.
Afraid to leave him by himself in the house, Perry and I loaded him up and took him with us to my sister's house for the first Thanksgiving meal of the day.
My sister lives outside of Muskogee on a ranch (10-15 minute drive). Rolls firmly secured in the trunk (124 less 12) and drunk dog leaning from the back seat onto the console of the car between Perry and I, we took off.
Now I know you probably don't believe that dogs burp, but believe me when I say after eating a tray of risen unbaked yeast rolls, DOGS WILL BURP. These burps were pure Old Charter. They would have matched or beat any smell in a drunk tank at the police station. But that's not the worst of it...
Now he was beginning to fart and they smelled like baked rolls. God strike me dead if I am not telling the truth! We endured this for the entire trip to Karen's, thankful she didn't live any further away than she did.
Once Jasper was firmly placed in my sister's garage with the door locked, we finally sat down to enjoy our first Thanksgiving meal of the day. The dogs was the topic of conversational all morning long and everyone made trips to the garage to witness my drunken dog, each returning with a take of Jasper's latest endeavor to walk without running into something. Of course, as the old adage goes: "what goes in must come out" and Jasper was no exception.
Granted, if it had been me that had eaten 12 risen, unbaked yeast rolls, you might as well have put a concrete block up my behind, but alas, a dog's digestive system is quite different from yours or mine. I discovered this was a mixed blessing when we prepared to leave Karen's house. Having discovered his "packages" on the garage floor, we loaded him up in the car, so we could hose down the floor.
This was another naive decision on our part. The blast of water from the hose hit the poop on the floor and the poop on the floor withstood the blast from the hose. It was like Portland cement beginning to set up and cure.
We finally tried to removed it with a shovel. I (obviously no one else was going to offer their services) had to get on my hands and knees with a coarse brush to get the remnants off of the floor. And as if this wasn't degrading enough, the darn dog in his drunken state had walked through the poop and left paw prints all over the garage floor that had to be brushed too.
Well, by this time, the dog was sobering up nicely so we took him home and dropped him off before we left for our second Thanksgiving dinner at Perry's sister's house.
I am happy to report that as of today, the dog is back to normal both in size and temperament. He has had a bath and is no longer tri-color. None the worse for wear, I presume. I am also happy to report that just this evening, I found 2 risen unbaked yeast rolls hidden inside my closet door.
It appears he must have come to his senses after eating 10 of them but decided hiding 2 of them for later would not be a bad idea. Now, I'm doing research on the computer as to "How to clean unbaked yeast dough from the carpet."

The usual chaos
Legion is in his second week of puppy school and is doing awesome! The trainer keeps telling us what a great job we're doing with him. Well, I wonder if she'd still say that if she saw the maniac he was at home...? He's got his sit, lie down, and stand pretty consistent. At least, it's to the point where he doesn't need a treat to reward him afterwards now. He's walking better and better on leash and we're expanding on that with the lessons from school. This week, we'll be starting to work on the "leave it" command...with food. We'll see how that goes because he's more of a Hoover than Abbi is!
We took the cones out of his ears yesterday and they're standing nicely so far. Actually, Legion took one out himself and Hayden ripped the other one out. We have another vet appointment on Friday to see if anything else needs to be done, of if he can FINALLY be free of the cones. He's so much more happy without them. Poor little guy... Josh and I tried to take pictures of him last night with his naked ears. I say "tried" because I think we got maybe 2 or 3 decent pictures out of about 20.

Legion loves his big brother and Hayden loves having a little shadow.

Josh got most of the work completed on his cover-up tattoo. It's been a pain to get this thing completed because he received it as trade for some speakers he installed in a tattoo shop in Old Sac. The first guy that started it really shouldn't ever have a tattoo gun in his hand: it was horrible. The next guy to work on it was self-detoxing from heroin (yes, heroin) and wasn't able to even get started on where the first guy left off. The next guy was/is more interested in launching his mixed martial arts career than getting Josh in his chair. But he sure does make it a point to invite Josh out to every local fight he has! Finally, the shop gets a guy in there that is able to do the work consistently. Josh has had about four sittings, spending at least four hours in the chair each time. The cover-up has turned out pretty good! If you look closely, you can still see the previous tattoo but you have to know where and what it was to really see it. He has one more short sitting for the tattoo artist to go over some of the finer detail work. And then he's done!! The owner of the building in which the tattoo shop is located was impressed with his speaker/wiring work and has asked Josh to do more work in some of the other shops. For trade. We're kinda on the fence about it because of the headache that it's been to get this one completed. But even so, Josh is already planning what he wants to get next. What about me??? Here are a few (dark) pics of Josh's new tattoo. The original was two barbed-wire bands with blue flames in between them. The new one is two koi fish in the Pisces symbol position, with water and rocks for accent. It's dark but it looks really good.

The dogs have been going crazy inside this last week because it's been too warm to take them out. So they've been playing inside... These are couple of pictures of after they've been playing because when I try to take action shots of them, all I end up with is a brindle blur.
Legion pre-cone rip-out.

Seriously, can you say no to this face?

Abbi, in "her" spot, cooling down.

The boys, tuckered out from chasing each other throughout the house.

This is what you get when you don't watch the puppy AT ALL TIMES.

So.......after trying to diet on my own, joining Weight Watchers, cancelling Weight Watchers to save money, trying to diet on my own again, things weren't working. I got an early anniversary present from Josh in the form of personal training sessions at the gym. While he thinks it's super lame, it what I really, truly wanted. I'd have an actual person to be accountable to each week and she and I can track the progress, or steps backward, that I'm making towards my goal. I do have a goal though, as seen below. It's a skirt that I was wearing when I first met Josh. However, I'm hoping that my butt and thighs haven't spread so far out that I'll never be able to fit in it again!

School days, school days!
Legion had his first day of school on Saturday and he did so well!! There are six other dogs in the class and I have to say that Legion was the most well-behaved out of all of them. Well, it's possible that I'm a little biased. :) Really though, he was the only dog that already had all of the commands they were focusing on down pat: his name, sit, lie down, stand, and find it (where you throw a treat and tell him to "find it"). Yeah, we kick butt. ;) This dog is so dang smart though!! We don't like to say it but we think that he's smarter than the other two. Sorry, Abbi & Hayden!!
Well, it seems that the next-door kitty got brave. Josh called me this morning while I was at work to tell me that his face was cut and bloody. I was thinking that it was from wrestling with the dogs because they can get to playing pretty rough. No, it turns out that the kitty got in our yard somehow and Abbi & Hayden had it cornered in the back corner. The cat was freaking out!! Josh was able to yank it out of the corner and bring it back to the neighbor without too much damage to his face and hands. When he told the neighbor what happened, the neighbor just said to him that the kitty needs to learn pretty quickly where his yard is. Um, dude, this is a CAT. They don't have yards.... I just hope that it doesn't come in our yard again when the dogs are out...I don't want to have to bring a dead kitty to the neighbor or worse (for us), have a dog that's lost an eye to a kitty scratch.

September Update
We started off this month by celebrating Tiny Gramma's 80th birthday. Josh and I took gramma and grampa out to dinner on Friday, the 4th, to Kico's Mexican Restaurant. It's usually pretty good food but this time, all of our dishes were overcooked. Lame...
That Sunday and Monday, Josh and I went to the State Fair. It's something that we'd been looking forward to for a long time because with the fair, comes the demolition derby!! We went both days so we were able to see both shows. And I brought my camera with me this year!!
Sunday began with some excitement on our street. I was sitting in the living room, waiting for Josh to get back from running some errands, when I hear a BANG, BANG, BANG. Well, our neighbors across the street are always making noises like that one so I thought it was them...until the dogs started going nuts. It peaked my curiosity so I went outside. Since a speed table was installed almost in front of our house, we've been waiting to hear the squeeeeeeeal and then BANG of someone getting into an accident there. So that was the first place that I looked. Nope, nothing going on. So I looked to my left. HO-LY MO-LY!! A lady in the blue car ran the red light on Whitney Avenue. The person in the white car t-boned her. The lady in the blue car was taken away in an ambulance with a small cut on her knee. The other ladies in the white car were fine. One thing we noticed about the white car though: in a head-on collision, the air-bags didn't deploy... Fire and CHP were in and out within a half hour and the cars were towed away very shortly thereafter.

Yes, I really did run down to the intersection and take pictures with my cell phone...
Here are some (read: a LOT) of the State Fair pics:
We had to fortify ourselves with a corndog!

Fried food alley!

We checked out the art exhibits. This one was actually a painting but had so much depth!

An AWESOME sculpture made entirely out of 100,000+ toothpics and Elmer's glue. Here's a video of it in action.

They had an entire exhibit hall dedicted to CANDY!!!

Resting before the derby.

It's derby time!! We got there about an hour early and the stands were already about half full. They have to prep the "course" so it's nice and sticky, rather than sandy. And then groom it to take out all of the bumps.

Notice these two cars. This could almost be a "good vs. bad" example of what car to use in a demolition derby. The car on the right was a 1996 Olds... Remember how it looks here.

After

Mid-Derby snack

The second day, we had to check out a couple of the rides from Neverland Ranch. They look like regular fair rides...

I love fair food!!

Como se llama?

We both love looking at and petting the animals. In all of the years of coming to the fair, I'd never seen the baby pigs being born. They'd either just been born or the sows were still preggo. But this year, TWO sows were in labor and I was able to actually see a little pink piggy being born!! I was too excited about it to get my camera though. Plus, I'm not sure if those pics would be very blog-friendly...
Derby night X2.

Josh kept trying to get me to let him take a "normal" picture of me. This is what he gets.

Girls can wreck cars too!! Just not very well...

Here are the monsters!
My little boys.

Whatcha makin', daddy?

The three waiting patiently for their food. They know they have to be out of the kitchen and lying down before we'll release them to eat.

The neighbors brought home a new kitten which will be an outdoor cat. Two things bother us about this. 1: We share a fence. We have three dogs. One of which has a high prey drive and another is developing his. 2: CAT PEE!! Nothing is better than when your curious puppy comes to love on you and his whole face smells of it! UGH! We don't think that this cat will last very long, or it will learn very quickly to stay out of our yard....
So Legion got a bath.

Puppy class for Legion started on the 12th. The first class was just an orientation so we didn't go with the dogs. Local newswoman Sharon Ito is in our class!
Things are still the same with us, nothing much changes. We're taking the dogs out to play more often because the three of them going full boar drives us batty. They absolutely love the soccer fields at the junior high by our house. We actually took Legion there last Sunday while some soccer games were going on. Just to get him used to the different noises. He did so well!! It's really important for him to experience things like that while he's young so it doesn't create a fearful 120-ish pound dog.
Legion's stats: 16 weeks old tomorrow and weighing in at 42.5 pounds. He now eats more than Hayden.
